Grange Unveils Gateway Signs to Blue and John Crow Mountains on World Heritage Day, April 18th

Jamaica will join the rest of the world in observing World Heritage Day under the theme ‘The Heritage of Sport’.

In commemoration of the Day, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport will undertake the symbolic unveiling of Gateway signs in Papine, St Andrew and Port Antonio, Portland leading to the Blue and John Crow Mountains.

According to the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, “the unveiling of the Gateway signs in Papine and Port Antonio, which both lead to the only mixed World Heritage site within the Caribbean, the Blue and John Crow Mountains, is one of several initiatives being undertaken by Jamaica in recognition of World Heritage Day.”

The signs will be unveiled by Minister Grange, UNESCO representative and other key stakeholders. Students from educational institutions in and around Papine will also participate in the ceremony set for 8:00 a.m. in the Papine Square.

World Heritage Day aims to raise public awareness about the world’s built monuments and heritage sites to individuals, communities and nations and the efforts required to protect and conserve them.

In 1983, UNESCO declared April 18 as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day.
