Grange lauds Donna McFarlane for people development programmes

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange has said that with the passing of Dr. Donna McFarlane, Jamaica is mourning the loss of another of its outstanding women.

Minister Grange said of Dr. McFarlane — who died yesterday after ailing for some time — that "she leaves behind an invaluable legacy in the work she did as Director/Curator of Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey, conceptualising and developing the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated to National Hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey."

Minister Grange said the nation is thankful that Dr. McFarlane, who with the philosophies of Marcus Garvey as her guide, made Liberty Hall a community-based institution which has put a high premium on the practical needs of the people living close to the institution.

"Her spectacular work resulted in the creation of the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum; Garvey Multimedia Computer Centre; Garvey Research/Reference Library; and Community Outreach programmes that include Adult Computer Literacy class, Garvey After-School Programme, and Summer Art. The African and Diasporic courses of study offered have sought to improve the sense of self-worth of our people."

Minister Grange said Dr. McFarlane, who worked for many years overseas, returned to Jamaica "to share the vast experience she had gained and demonstrated love of country a deep desire to play a role in advancing her compatriots."

Minister Grange expressed condolences to the family, colleagues at Liberty Hall and across the Ministry, friends and associates of Dr. McFarlane.
