We must make sports accessible to deaf students – Grange

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, says that the absence of physical education instructors in schools for the deaf is an “obvious anomaly” which her Ministry plans to work in tandem with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information to correct.

The Minister was speaking at the Media Launch for the Council of Voluntary Social Services 2017 Summer Games at the National Volunteer Centre in Kingston.

Minister Grange said: “None of our schools for the deaf in Jamaica has physical education instructors. This is a situation that we should not allow to persist any longer. So my Ministry will move to remedy what is clearly a case of disservice to a set of our young people with athletic ability but who do not get the kind of instruction that could help them to realise their potential.”

According to the Minister, the CVSS Summer Games is among the most important programmes implemented by the CVSS, particularly because they involve members of the disabled community who are often overlooked when it comes to sport.

The CVSS Summer Games will include participants from inner city communities, whose involvement according to the Minister will “encourage them to be disciplined, appreciate friendly competition and to respect fairplay and sportsmanship.

Minister Grange commended the organisers, sponsors and all the volunteers who give of themselves to make the lives of others better.

The CVSS Summer Games is set to take place on July 1 at the UWI Mona Bowl.
