Grange commends private and public sector for displaying spirit of Independence

The St. Catherine Parish Council was today (Thursday) named winner of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) Spirit of Independence Competition in the category best decorated parish/town square.

Mayberry Investments Limited won the trophy for best decorated business/office in the private sector while the Forestry Department won for the public sector office.

The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Devon House in Kingston.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange congratulated all the entities and individuals who participated in this year’s competition.

“We are happy that you used our colours, emblems and cultural goods to help us create that unique Jamaican festival feeling this year,” Minister Grange said in a message delivered by Alison McLean, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry.

The Minister highlighted that it is important for citizens to celebrate their Jamaican-ness by participating in national observations and using the national colours in creative ways to display pride in being Jamaican.

“We look forward to more creative displays — even bigger next year as Jamaica celebrates 55 years of Independence,” said Minister Grange.

The JCDC also awarded media houses, advertisers and several other public and private sector entities for displaying the spirit of independence.
