ACIJ to bridge gap between the Government and cultural communities

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Honourable Olivia Grange, today announced that the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) through the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica (ACIJ) will play a major role in bridging the gap between the Government of Jamaica and cultural communities across the island.

The Minister says the ACIJ will work closely with the Maroon and Rastafarian communities.

“The Accompong Maroons have sought partnership with the government to enhance the work of the Maroon communities. They have created a platform to work with the Government of Jamaica in forming a cultural partnership between Jamaica and Ghana,” she said.

“This initiative is timely given the ministry’s focus on strengthening Jamaica’s cultural capital such as indigenous observances and festivals. The ACIJ will work closely with these communities and facilitate the partnership necessary to bridge the gaps,” the Minister said.

Referring specifically to Rastafari, Minister Grange said the Government is committed to declaring Pinnacle, home of the Rastafarians, a heritage site and cultural centre.

The Minister was speaking at Heritage Fest, hosted by the Institute of Jamaica at their office on East Street, Downtown Kingston.

The Minister congratulated the IOJ for the expansion of the programme of activities for Heritage Fest this year which now includes Jamaican traditional cuisine, farmer’s market, local herbs and spices, children activities, jewelry, craft and a bus tour of Downtown Kingston.

We place people at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that culture is the great equaliser and transformer that makes ordinary men and women great.

We believe that gender equality is essential in a modern society.

We believe that an entertained person is a happy person and happy persons make happy societies.

We believe that physical activity enhances lives and sport is the medicine that heals and corrects.
