Sport Minister Congratulates Kingston Hummingbirds for lifting the Berger Elite League Trophy

The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has praised the Kingston Humming Birds Netball Team for “exhibiting true grit and determination” to win the Berger Elite League Netball Competition at the National Stadium last Saturday (February 3).

Minister Grange, whose remarks to the Closing Ceremony were read by Sport Advisor Mr. Ali McNab, said the Humming Birds deserved to be the champions after the massive recovery they made in the fourth quarter to win two games in a row in the best-of-three finals against the St. Catherine Spurs.

Miss Grange said that it required “digging deep” for the Kingston Hummingbirds to be six goals behind at the end of the third quarter of the match and to win by a 64-59 margin.

The Sport Minister also congratulated the coaches of the Kingston Humming Birds, Marvette Anderson and Roy Pryce for the guidance of the team which was winning the Berger Elite League Competition for the second time in the four-year history of the League, the only team to do so.

And to the Manchester Spurs and coaching staff, the Minister said, “Well done on reaching the Finals.”

Miss Grange has also commended Berger Paints for its continued sponsorship of the League and called on other companies to show “similar tangible support for Jamaica’s netball.”

She said the Government too was willing to look at more ways that it can assist the netball, which is Jamaica’s leading team sport.
