Jamaica to remain strong voice in World Heritage

Minister Grange said: “Since serving on the committee, Jamaica has helped to advance a number of issues that face Small Island Developing States in compiling nomination dossiers, managing World Heritage sites, financing activities associated with world heritage sites and ensuring on-going training and development for Caribbean nationals working in World Heritage.”

The Acting Permanent Secretary in the of Ministry Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Dr Janice Lindsay, is leading the Jamaican delegation to the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee now on in Krakow, Poland.

The Delegation includes, Tracy Commock, Director of the Natural History Museum of Jamaica at the Institute of Jamaica and Debra Kay Palmer, Director of World Heritage and Cultural Conventions in the Ministry.

Minister Grange has mandated the delegation to ascertain ways in which Jamaica can help to ensure that World Heritage becomes an impactful and game changing resource of local and national economies.

The Meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee brings together 21 member states including Jamaica, more than 170 observer nations and many nongovernmental organisations.

The Committee will consider the State of Conservation of over 150 sites that are currently on the World Heritage List, 55 of which are at risk of being named to the Danger List. It will also assess the nominations of 33 sites to the World Heritage List.
