Garvey film a highlight of Heritage Week celebration

Kingston, 5 October 2021 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has announced that Jamaicans will be able to view a new film on the life of National Hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Garvey, during National Heritage Week.

The film, titled “African Redemption: The Life and Legacy of Marcus Garvey” will air on TVJ and PBCJ.

Minister Grange said the award-winning Jamaican-born filmmaker, Roy T. Anderson, has kindly consented to the airing of the film on the National Hero through a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

The film chronicles Garvey’s journey to becoming one of the world’s leading civil rights activists.

Filmed in Jamaica, Ghana, Canada, USA, UK, and Central America, the docu- drama blends live action sequences and stunning still photographs with no- holds barred interviews and conversations with world-renowned leaders, scholars, and personalities. Multiple Emmy-award winning actor Keith David — star of Greenleaf — lent his voice as the narrator of the 85-minute feature- length documentary film.

Also sharing the influence of Garvey’s philosophy on their work are internationally acclaimed Reggae artistes Sean Paul and David Hinds, lead singer for Steel Pulse; award-winning American actors Louis Gossett, Jr. and Danny Glover; Charles Rangel, a retired United States Congressman; and Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, the former President of Ghana.

African Redemption: The Life and Legacy of Marcus Garvey will air in two parts on TVJ. The first part will air on Sunday, October 17 at 5:00pm with the conclusion on Heroes Day, Monday, October 18 at 5:30pm.

PBCJ will broadcast the full documentary on its cable channel on Heroes Day, Monday, October 18 at 8:00pm.

Heritage Week is being observed from Sunday, October 10 to Heroes Day, Monday, October 18 under the theme ‘Saluting Our Heroes... Safeguarding Our Legacy’.

Among the activities for the period will be a virtual Heritage Week Church Service on Sunday, October 17; as well as the Salute to Our National Heroes (Wreath Laying Ceremony) and the Ceremony of Investiture and Presentation of National Awards, which will be broadcast on Heroes Day.
