London, 28 April 2022 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, and the Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, have together launched the Jamaica 60 programme of activities in the United Kingdom.
The launch took place at the White City House in London, England.
Minister Grange said she was inspired by the excitement of Jamaicans and people of Jamaican decent in the United Kingdom to be a part of the island’s Diamond Jubilee.
She said the contributions of Jamaicans to UK society would be among the achievements to be highlighted during the celebrations.
“We can proudly insert ourselves at the very heart of the economy and culture of the UK, celebrating proudly and without fear of opposition, our contribution…”
Minister Grange said that the “texture, colour, tonality and culture of the UK had changed forever because of [the] presence [of Jamaicans].”
A series of activities will be staged across the UK in the next few months in celebration of Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of Independence.
Many of the activities have been planned to coincide with the staging of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England at which Jamaican athletes will be among the main attractions.
The global celebration of Jamaica 60 is being held under the theme ‘Re-igniting a Nation for Greatness’.
