Kingston, 16 April 2026 - The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, said tonight, "I am left in a state of deep sadness having received the news that iconic Reggae singer-songwriter Ernie Smith is dead.”
Mr Smith who was 80 passed after being hospitalised in the United States.
Minister Grange said:
"Ernie Smith with the booming voice and cleverly crafted lyrics was a favourite at home and abroad. I offer deepest sympathies to his wife, Claudette Bailey Smith, and the rest of his family, friends, and associates.
"Ernie was my friend for years and I even assisted him at one point with his career.”
Christened Glenroy Anthony Michael Angelo Smith, Ernie became legendary for hits in the late 1960s and 1970s, including 'Duppy Gunman' and 'Life is Just for Living'.
"We know that he had thoughts of being a radio announcer but music got hold of him and the legacy he leaves confirms that he made the right choice between the radio studio and the recording studio.
"Ernie Smith has surely earned his place among the best proponents of Jamaican music.
"Though silenced, his special voice will resound in our hearts and memory forever.
"Rest in peace Ernie. We will always love you."
