Denzil Thorpe Appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport

The Ministry of Culture, Gender Entertainment and Sport has announced the assignment of Mr. Denzil Thorpe as Permanent Secretary with effect from January 5, 2018.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, made the announcement recently.

Mr. Thorpe is a career public servant, who served for approximately twenty-two (22) years at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, where he started his career as a Computer Programmer in July 1993. Over the years, he served in several positions at the Ministry, including stints in the post of Director of National Insurance and finally as the Director of Social Security.

In June 2015, he was appointed as Permanent Secretary and assigned to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.

He attended the St. Catherine Primary School and is a former Head Boy of St. George’s College. He credits both Catholic institutions with providing the educational and social background to enhance the upbringing of his parents, who are both former public servants.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Computer Sciences, and a Master of Science degree in Computer-Based Management Information Systems, both from the University of the West Indies (UWI), in 1993 and 2001 respectively. He was also a part of Cohort 3 of the Caribbean Leadership Project’s Leadership Development Programme, which he successfully completed in July 2015.

Mr. Thorpe is married to Nadine and they have a daughter, Deandra, “who is the apple of our eyes”. He is a member of the Gregory Park Baptist Church.

An avid sports fan, he has served as part of the management team for both the Manning Cup and Track and Field teams of his alma mater. Mr. Thorpe is a Director of the St. George’s College Old Boys Association.

Minister's charge

I remain hopeful because of the giftedness of the Jamaican people; their warmth and creativity; their dynamism and indomitable spirit that have resulted in excellence in all sectors.

It is by tapping into the gifts and awakening the spirit of the Jamaican people that we will, by God’s grace, re-group, re-engineer and re-open to a brighter future with Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Olivia Grange
