Grange: assistance for former national sports reps coming

Kingston, 1 February 2021 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, says her Ministry is in the process of establishing a special fund to assist former national sports representatives who have fallen on hard times.

Minister Grange has directed the Sports Development Foundation to set aside money for the special fund while she finalises the team that will implement and manage it.

During her meeting with the new Board of the SDF last week, Minister Grange urged the members to treat the establishment of the fund as a priority action.

The new members of the Board of the SDF are:

Chairman George Soutar (Attorney-at-Law)
Dr. Michael Fennell (International Sports Administrator)
Mr. Lloyd Pommells (Former Banker)
Mrs. Molly Rhone (International Sports Administrator)
Mr. Compton Rodney (Financial Consultant)
Mrs. Annmarie Heron (National Sports Co-ordinator)
Mr. Newton Amos (Businessman)
Ms Lilian Reid (Chartered Accountant)
Mr. Alexander Shaw (Attorney-at-Law)
Mr. Denzil Wilks, General Manager (ex officio)

The Minister welcomed the appointees and discussed her vision for the transformation and streamlining of the national sports entities during this calendar year; and the critical role of the SDF going forward.

Minister Grange said the changes would improve efficiency and enhance service delivery.

Minister's charge

I remain hopeful because of the giftedness of the Jamaican people; their warmth and creativity; their dynamism and indomitable spirit that have resulted in excellence in all sectors.

It is by tapping into the gifts and awakening the spirit of the Jamaican people that we will, by God’s grace, re-group, re-engineer and re-open to a brighter future with Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Olivia Grange
