Minister Grange, speaking at the opening ceremony of Jamaica’s 33rd Special Olympics National Summer Games, noted that the Government’s recent donation of J$2.5 million to assist in the preparation for the 2017 World Winter Games in Austria “is an indication of our commitment to the programme not just for 2017 but for the years ahead.”
“As a Government, we are committed to the growth of the Special Olympics programme. We will continue to support and pay close attention to how the programme expands. I anticipate the creation of more career choices in sport as we move forward in the partnership for prosperity,” she added.
The Minister also used the opportunity to laud the management team, technical and supporting staff for their continued thrust to hosting year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of ‘Olympic-type’ sporting activities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
“Let me acknowledge and commend the sterling efforts of the management team, coaches, support personnel, athletes, families and communities, as they work together to develop the Association and increase participation in the programme,” Minister Grange said.
She used the opportunity to urge more state agencies and private sector organisations to lend greater support to Special Olympics Jamaica, an example of a National Sport Association that many others can emulate.
“We look forward to great competition, good sportsmanship and lots of fun during the 2017 World Winter Games in Austria. Good luck to all the athletes,” expressed the Minister.
