Kingston, 10 May 2024 – This year’s Labour Day on May 23 will focus on people with disabilities, the elderly and the vulnerable.
The announcement was made today by the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, at the launch of Labour Day 2024 at her Ministry’s Headquarters in New Kingston.
Minister Grange said:
“I am happy to focus Labour Day on caring for persons with disabilities, the elderly and the vulnerable by providing for all access to our country’s goods and services. It is about access to buildings, to health care, to education, to every element of the nation’s goods and services by all, without exception.”
The Minister called on the nation to use Labour Day to improve the access of people with disabilities, the elderly and the vulnerable to schools, churches, hospitals and clinics, restaurants, museums and other facilities.
“It is about building ramps, working elevators, smart pedestrian crossings, road and other signs and physical symbols made easy to interpret… I invite all Jamaicans to extend the right hand of caring and fellowship to every person with disability, the elderly and the vulnerable this Labour Day.”
This year’s National Project will increase access to Jamaica’s oldest cultural institution, the Institute of Jamaica, where work on Labour Day will focus on building a ramp and preparation for the installation of an elevator.
The Prime Minister will lead the National Project, which will involve masonry, carpentry, painting, electrical work and lighting.
The theme for Labour Day is ‘Ramp up di access… Show you care’.
Minister Grange is encouraging Jamaicans to register their projects on the Jamaica Information Service website or through the website of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.
