Senator Tom Tavares-Finson to Lead National Gallery

Minister of Culture Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Honourable Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange said the recent appointment of Senator the Honourable Thomas Tavares-Finson as Chairman of the new Board of Management of the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ) forms part of the Ministry’s overall thrust to further develop and promote all aspects of culture in Jamaica.

According to Minister Grange, this thrust will be further enhanced through the appointment of industry related stakeholders, technocrats and practitioners to state boards.

“Our aim is to ensure that the people who are called to serve are willing and able and have a vested interest in the continuation and promotion of the many facets of Jamaica’s rich, vibrant and illustrious cultural legacy,” she said.

The Minister added that she is confident that Senator Tavares-Finson and the new board he leads will steer the NGJ in a new direction that is in keeping with global trends as it relates to the development of art and galleries.

The National Gallery of Jamaica was established in 1974 and is the oldest and largest public art museum in the Anglophone Caribbean. It has a comprehensive collection of early, modern and contemporary art from Jamaica along with smaller Caribbean and international holdings.

The National Gallery of Jamaica has an active exhibition programme which includes retrospectives of work by major Jamaican artists, thematic exhibitions, guest-curated exhibitions, touring exhibitions that originate outside of the island and the premier national exhibition, the Jamaica Biennial.
