Government reaffirms commitment towards gender equality, women’s right and empowerment

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Honourable Olivia Grange, has reaffirmed the Government of Jamaica’s commitment towards achieving gender equality and promoting women’s rights and empowerment.

"Economic empowerment for women is critical, we have made progress over the years, but it is essential that we redouble our efforts towards achieving this goal,” Minister Grange said during a Courtesy Call paid on her by United Nations Under Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director, Madame Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, in Kingston today (Tuesday).

The Executive Director is on her first official visit to Jamaica and will be participating in a celebratory walk, recognising the Government of Jamaica’s ratification of C189, the Convention on Domestic Workers, tomorrow (November 2).

“We came here to reaffirm our partnership with the people of Jamaica, congratulating them for ratifying the Domestic Convention (C189) – an opportunity to empower women and to secure jobs for women through that convention,” said Madame Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

The celebratory walk will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 6:30-7:30 am at Emancipation Park. Participants will include The National Housing Trust, Jamaica Household Workers Union and Jamaica Employer’s Federation.

The UN Women boss also congratulated Minister Grange on Jamaica’s progress in developing legislation to address violence against women.

Minister's charge

I remain hopeful because of the giftedness of the Jamaican people; their warmth and creativity; their dynamism and indomitable spirit that have resulted in excellence in all sectors.

It is by tapping into the gifts and awakening the spirit of the Jamaican people that we will, by God’s grace, re-group, re-engineer and re-open to a brighter future with Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Olivia Grange
