Grange calls for unity to end violence against women and girls

Kingston, 8 August 2023 – The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, condemned recent attacks on women and girls in the country.

Minister Grange said she was “heartbroken” by the attack on three women during a home invasion in Trelawny which resulted in the death of 15 year old Jamila Cole.

“The unspeakable violence meted out to Jamila, her mother and cousin at their house in Albert Town has shocked and saddened the nation,” said Minister Grange as she called on the nation to “say prayers for the survivors.”

The Minister also expressed sadness at the killing of Heather Moyston in Kingston, in what is reported to be an incidence of domestic violence.

Minister Grange said:
“We are all heartbroken by these incidents but we must resolve to unite to end the violence. The Police are doing all they can, but it requires all of us to end the violence. So if you know anything about what happened in Trelawny please say something and help bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The Minister also urged Jamaicans to “report the domestic violence that you know is happening next door” as these reports save lives.
