MINISTER GRANGE ATTENDING UNESCO SPORT CONFERENCE IN RUSSIA

The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport left Jamaica today bound for Kazan in Russia where she will be attending the Sixth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport.

The areas that will be considered by the Kazan Conference are: access to sport as a fundamental right for all, the promotion of investment in sport and physical education and the continued fight against match-fixing, illegal betting as well as doping and corruption in sport.

Some 500 delegates including sports ministers and experts are expected to attend.

Minister Grange says that, “Not only will I participate in the Conference but I will also be using the opportunity to network with colleague Ministers from other countries with which Jamaica shares interests. As you know, Jamaica is viewed as one of the key players in sport in the world.”

The Minister is accompanied by Mrs Florette Blackwood, Senior Director for Sport Development and Monitoring in the Ministry.

They return to Jamaica on July 19.

International Conferences of Sport Ministers have been organized by UNESCO since 1976 to sharpen public policies, to promote gender equality in sport, to improve school sport and to implement the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport. It is the only forum bringing together ministers of sport and senior government officials across the world to tackle the challenges facing sport.
