Speaking at the National Labour Day Project at the Gregory Park Basic School yesterday, May 23, 2016, Minister Grange stated that over 800 projects were registered across the island and that the National Labour Day Planning Committee will use the information collected during registration to effectively monitor the outcomes and the continuation of each project.

“Let us take personal responsibility to keep our homes, communities and the environs clean today and everyday thereafter, we must continue to practice clean-up efforts and work to keep our surroundings healthy, safe and clean,” said Minister Grange.

Labour Day 2016 was observed under the theme ‘For Health’s Sake… Keep it Clean’ and underscored the importance of creating and maintaining a clean and safe environment in which citizens are healthy and able to perform at optimal capacity.

“We will continue to work in tandem with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development through the National Solid Waste Management Agency as well as the Ministry of Health, as we aim to keep Jamaica clean and healthy. As we strive for economic growth, it is our responsibility to maintain good environmental practices and personal wellness and health including hygiene” she added.

The National Labour Day Project was carried out in the Portmore communities of Gregory Park, Washington Mews and Christian Pen, following a decision made in response to reports by the Ministry of Health of confirmed cases of the Zika virus being detected in Portmore and also in response to high mosquito infestation level.
