On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, fire in an office occupied by the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), at Independence Park Limited complex, caused damage to some records, furniture and equipment.

The fire was discovered at approximately 7:10 am by an auxiliary staff member who was cleaning the offices.

Quick action from the fire department and a few staff members on hand at the time extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading.

Officers from the Ministry were early on the scene and the Minister was informed of the developments.

Commenting on the fire, Minister of Sport, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange said, “The Ministry awaits the outcome of the investigation by the fire department along with the Special Crime unit which has commenced immediate investigation into the incident”.

Minister Grange also said that instructions have been given that the offices of the INSPORTS should remain closed during the investigation.

Minister's charge

I remain hopeful because of the giftedness of the Jamaican people; their warmth and creativity; their dynamism and indomitable spirit that have resulted in excellence in all sectors.

It is by tapping into the gifts and awakening the spirit of the Jamaican people that we will, by God’s grace, re-group, re-engineer and re-open to a brighter future with Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Olivia Grange
