Minister Grange was speaking at a press conference at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies this morning held to announce the renaming of the Football Centre in honour of the late President of the Jamaica Football Federation.
Of the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence Minister Grange said, “It deserves the attention and support of all of us who love the ‘wonderful game’.”
The Minister said she was aware that the Centre was moving along fine with its programmes but wondered if the man Horace Burrell might not require even more. “I Think he would want from the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence the kind of leadership that would once more see Jamaica qualifying for the World Cup Finals.”
“He would maybe want more; for us just not to stop at qualifying but to go on and place at least among the top three at a World Cup Finals in the not too distant future.
“What I can promise the Captain and the nation, is that my Ministry is prepared to work with the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence in whatever way the Centre requires in the effort to further the Captain’s legacy.
“The Ministry is pledged to continue its support for Jamaica’s Football. I think everyone knows of Government’s contribution to the sport through the Sports Development Foundation.”
The Sport Minister said also that the UWI should be lauded for so readily agreeing to the name change in honour of the Captain.
